Abstract

Students of the Institut Ilmu Kesehatan (IIK) Pelamonia Makassar live at the intersection of regional languages and Indonesian, Bugis-Makassar cultural values, and the institutional culture of a health campus affiliated with the Indonesian Army. This study aims to describe the linguistic and cultural aspects of these students and to explain how they can be developed into professional competence. A qualitative descriptive approach based on library research was used, integrating sociolinguistics, cultural anthropology, transcultural health communication, and educational science. The findings show that students operate in three linguistic domains, namely peer interaction in the Makassar dialect, academic Indonesian with medical terminology, and clinical interaction in which code-switching to regional languages helps communication with patients. Local values such as siri' na pacce and sipakatau are consistent with caring and professional ethics, although siri' may discourage students from asking questions or reporting errors. The study implies that regional language skills and local cultural understanding should be integrated into the curriculum as part of cultural competence training for future health professionals.
