Abstract

This study aims to analyze digital consumerism as both a social phenomenon and an ontological problem from the perspective of Martin Heidegger's philosophy of technology. The research is motivated by the growing culture of consumerism driven by social media, digital algorithms, and digital capitalism, which have transformed lifestyles and the way individuals understand themselves. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from books, scholarly journal articles, and other relevant academic sources and analyzed descriptively and interpretively by examining the major concepts of digital consumerism and Heidegger's philosophical thought. The findings reveal that digital consumerism is no longer merely an economic activity aimed at satisfying needs but has become a means of constructing identity, seeking social recognition, and representing the self within digital spaces. From Heidegger's perspective, modern technology, through the concept of Gestell (enframing), shapes the way reality is disclosed, reducing human beings to standing-reserve within the logic of digital capitalism. Consequently, social media and algorithmic systems influence not only patterns of consumption but also the mode of human existence (Dasein) in the digital world. This study concludes that digital consumerism constitutes a philosophical issue concerning the existential crisis of contemporary humanity, highlighting the need for critical and reflective awareness in the use of technology to preserve authentic human existence.
